Calcium is the fifth most abundant element in the human body. It is used to for hormonal regulation and to treat persons with low blood calcium levels who do not get enough calcium from their diets. It may also be used to ensure that women get enough calcium (e.g., women who are pregnant, nursing, or postmenopausal, people taking certain medications such as phenytoin, phenobarbital, or prednisone). Calcium ions, as electrolytes, play an important part in the physiological and biochemical processes of organisms and cells, as well as the contraction of all muscle cell types. The intestine absorbs around one-third of the calcium consumed as a free ion, while the kidneys regulate the plasma calcium level.
